GOALS OF THE AMERICAN VETERANS ADAPTIVE GOLF PROGRAM

As Americans on the homefront, we must unite to do what we can however we can.  If the AVAG program "makes a difference" for only one, than we have accomplished our mission.

To date, over 300,000 soldiers of the 1.5 million who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan, have been diagnosed with PTSD or major depression. These soldiers, combined with our veterans of past, are overwhelming the military and veterans’ health care systems and as a result, hundreds of thousands of wounded troops and veterans are being forced to wait months and even years for appointments to receive proper therapy and treatments. Some veterans with serious mental health problems have committed suicide while waiting for counseling.  On average, 18 veterans commit suicide every day in the U.S.

10 Goals of “American Veterans Adaptive Golf”:

  • To provide a weekly social interaction, rehabilitative and therapeutic environment between Veterans, to strengthen new friendships, create peer support groups which provides sharing of experiences and treatments among themselves to help work out underlying issues.
  • To conduct certification workshops in conjunction with all VA hospitals and staff; PT’s, OT’s, CTRS’s with PGA/LPGA Professionals to properly train and certify staff on both how to teach adaptive golf and how to properly conduct an adaptive golf program curriculum on a consistent basis.
  • To provide the best educational, recreational rehabilitative and therapeutic program for our veterans and military personnel.
  • To provide orientation of golf basics; safety, equipment, rules or any modifications to rules, scoring, and etiquette: Ex. Understanding specific golf course policies (dress codes, golf cart, handicap flag or SoloRider car procedures) and strategies for pace of play for the most enjoyable experience for everyone.
  • To equip participants, staff and facility with customized adaptive golf clubs, training tools and equipment and Solo-Rider golf cars for total accessibility on the course from tee to green.

  • To demonstrate how essential, positive life skills are related and applied to the game of golf and how golf greatly enhances social interactions with family, friends and everyone in their daily lives.
  • To refer participants and receive referrals from other entities providing similar goals whenever possible to provide assistive programs to enhance specific needs and continue their personal long-term achievement goals.
  • To provide an overview of golf-related career opportunities to help them focus on getting back into the civilian world and being a productive citizen in society.
